olefin rugOlefin or polypropylene is a material that is commonly used in area rugs. It is a material that has a lot of advantages and some disadvantages as well.

Olefin Advantages: There are many good characteristics of olefin. For starters, it is a rather cheap material. This allows for consumers to purchase some rather inexpensive, yet quality rugs. It is also very resistant to soiling. This is because olefin absorbs little moisture. Finally, it is a rather soft material, when compared to nylon, etc. This makes it a comfortable material to use in a rug.

Olefin Disadvantages: The main disadvantage to this material is that because it is soft, it wears quickly. For this reason, you should not use an olefin rug in a high wear area if you want it to last for any length of time. This means that it is a poor material for entryways and hallways. Another problem with olefin is that it attracts grease like a magnet. This also makes it a bad candidate for an entry rug.

Cleaning Olefin Rugs: Because they absorb little moisture, cleaning these types of rugs is very easy. They are very forgiving so the average home owner should have no issue cleaning them with a rental carpet cleaner or a home carpet cleaner. Just clean them like you would a standard wall to wall carpet The only potential problem to look out for is what is beneath the rug. Because this type of material does not absorb moisture, water will tend to run down the fiber to the backing of the carpet, potentially wetting the floor underneath. Because of this, you should avoid cleaning them on top of hardwood floors.

Berber PatchBerber carpet is the name associated with carpets with a loop construction. Traditional Berber has a more specific definition, but these days, if it has a continuous loop it is referred to as a Berber carpet. It can be made of just about any material but it is most commonly made of either olefin/polypropylene or nylon. Because of the tight loop construction, it does have some special cleaning requirements.

Because of the loop construction, this type of carpet can be tough to thoroughly clean. The construction causes a textured pattern which makes it tricky for the cleaner to reach all of the carpet fiber. This is true with all methods but it is particularly true with steam cleaning where the carpet wand may have trouble staying in contact with the surface of the carpet. To combat this problem, your carpet cleaner should take more time when cleaning this type of carpet so that they reach the entire surface. If using a steam cleaning method, your carpet cleaner should make an extra drying pass to remove additional moisture that may have been missed if the carpet wand lost contact with the surface.

Another problem that is common with Berber carpet is wicking. Wicking can occur when the carpet takes too long to dry and soil from below the carpet wicks back up to the surface. This is a problem with all Berbers but is particularly bad with olefin or polypropylene Berber carpets. This is because this type of material absorbs little moisture causing water to flow down the fiber to the backing of the carpet. To combat wicking problems, your carpet cleaner should get the carpet dry as fast as possible. This might involve the use of carpet fans, ceiling fans, the homes HVAC system or a combination of methods.

The last problem that I will discuss with Berber is the possibility of runs in the carpet. Because of the continuous loop, it is possible to pull a fiber and cause a run that goes across the entire surface of the carpet from one end to another. To combat this problem, loose ends should be snipped when possible and care should be taken hen vacuuming the carpet or when using rotary and crb (counter rotating brush) machines.

duster-featherYou might not think about it much, but at some point, you will need to clean your feather duster. At some point, they will get so full of dust and dirt that they become less effective at cleaning. No problem, they are quite easy to clean.

In most cases, to clean a feather duster all you will have to do is shake it out. Of course, you do not want to do this inside, so go outside and shake it. Do not beat it against a wall or anything hard because this could easily damage the feathers. as an alternative to shaking your feather duster, you could also use your homes vacuum cleaner if it has a good HEPA filter. Simply take the hose attachment and vacuum the feathers being sure to get to all of the ones in the middle as well.

If your duster has gotten soiled with liquid or something that will not simply shake out, you will need a more aggressive cleaning. Fill your sink with warm water and a tablespoon of a mild dish soap. Take your feather duster and submerge it into the mixture while moving it back and forth. After a minute or so, remove it and rinse it with warm water. Now wring the duster out with your hands and hang it up to air dry. Let it dry completely before putting it back to use. When it is dry, fluff the feathers a bit with your fingers and you are done.

carpet cleaningCarpet cleaning is not something that is done extremely often. Although we should have our carpet cleaned once a year, we often put it off and wait several years to have it cleaned. Because of this fact, you may be uncertain about what is included in a standard carpet cleaning. One common question is whether carpet cleaners move furniture. Well, do they?

The answer is yes and no. Some carpet cleaners move furniture and some do not. The ones who do move furniture will typically state it in their advertisements or will be quick to bring it up. If a carpet cleaner does not say that they move furniture, you can be sure that they do not or that there is an extra charge for it.

Even if a carpet cleaner does move furniture, they will typically not move all of the furniture. Moving all of the furniture in a home would be expensive and would be an unnecessary risk. Most carpet cleaners who do move furniture will move small items like chairs and end tables. Some will even move couches and similar furniture. Very few cleaners will move beds or dressers and just about no cleaner will move electronics.

carpet cleaningIf you have not had your carpet cleaned in some time, or ever, you might have some questions about what they do and do not do. One of the most common questions is whether the carpet cleaner vacuums the carpet or whether you need to do it yourself. So, do carpet cleaners vacuum the carpet first?

The answer to this question is yes and no. Some carpet cleaners include vacuuming in their price and some carpet cleaners do not vacuum or charge extra for it. You will have to ask your carpet cleaner specifically, but most carpet cleaners that do vacuum will state it clearly. If your carpet cleaner does not state that they vacuum the carpet, you should assume they do not.

Vacuuming your carpet before a carpet cleaning is a very important step. The dry soil removed during a vacuuming is easily removed. If the carpet is not vacuumed beforehand, the dry soil will turn to mud when moisture is applied and it will be more difficult to remove. So, always be sure that the carpet will be vacuumed before a carpet cleaning. Whether you do it or they do it is not important, it needs to be done. Also, do not assume that a carpet cleaners vacuum is any better than yours. The vacuums that most carpet cleaners use are jut more durable versions of home vacuums.

carpet cleaningCarpet cleaning is something that is essential if you want your home or office carpet to last for a long time. Some people avoid having their carpet cleaned because they fear mold growth. You may have heard rumors that having your carpet cleaned, especially with a steam cleaning method, can cause mold growth. Well, is it true?

The answer is no, carpet cleaning, when done properly, will not cause mold growth. Carpets must be wet for a very long time in order for mold to grow. If you hire a professional cleaning company, carpet will be dry in less than 24 hours in most cases. Many cleaners can even get the carpet dry in just 1 to 2 hours. It would take days or even weeks for mold to grow.

If a carpet is cleaned improperly however, it may be possible for mold to grow. The carpet would have to be soaked deep all the way down to the pad for this to happen though. To avoid this, just be sure to hire a reputable carpet cleaning company to do the work for you. Always get a referral if possible when hiring a carpet cleaner. If doing the work yourself with a rental machine, follow the directions on the machine exactly. Also, avoid cleaning the carpet yourself on a humid day when evaporation would be limited. Finally, whether you do it yourself or hire a professional, use fans and forced ventilation to keep air moving on the damp carpet.

preemieA baby’s skin is very delicate. It is easily irritated and care must be taken with how you wash a baby’s clothes. This is especially true with a preemie (premie) baby. Preemie baby skin is even thinner than an average newborn and can be much more sensitive. So, how do you wash clothes for a preemie baby and make sure that you do not irritate their skin? It is actually very easy.

The first thing that you need to do is choose a good detergent. You should use a baby safe detergent such as Dreft. (Check prices for Dreft.) Baby safe detergents will not contain all of the harsh cleaners and perfumes that a traditional detergent contains. They are a bit more expensive but they are definitely worth it.

Next, you need to avoid the use of fabric softeners and fabric softening sheets. The perfumes and chemicals in fabric softeners can be irritating to a preemie’s skin.

Finally, you should do an extra rinse on your premie baby’s clothes. An extra rinse will just insure that the clothing is as residue free as possible. Be sure to use warm water as well. Warm water will rinse and clean better.

Orange soda stains are some of the most difficult to remove. The key to removal is to get to them quickly and to use the right chemicals on them. Avoid aggressive cleaners because they can set the stain. To remove the stain you need some a spotting cloth such as a terry cloth towel or dye free paper towels, a general spotting solution and a vinegar solution. To make your general spotting solution you will take a quart of water and add one tablespoon of mild dish soap. Do not use other soaps such as laundry or automatic dish soaps as they are too strong. To make your vinegar solution, you will mix up one part of white vinegar and three parts of regular tap water. Be sure to test any cleaner that you will use on a hidden part of your home’s carpet such as a closet.

  • Step 2:
Lightly mist the spot with your general spotter. Allow the spotter to dwell for a few seconds and then blot it up with your towel. Once again, dab the spot, do not rub.
  • Step 3:
Repeat this process until no more of the orange soda stain transfers to your cloth.
  • Step 4:
Neutralize your spotter with your vinegar solution. Apply a generous amount of the vinegar solution to the spot without over saturating the area. Blot the solution up after giving it a few seconds of dwell time.
  • Step 5:
Allow the area to fully dry before putting it back to use. A small portable fan can be uses to speed drying time.

If the spot has dried, some of the dye may be left in the carpet. To remove this, you will need to get a dye remover such as Red Out. Most home improvement stores will sell them in the cleaning supply aisle. Follow the directions on the bottle of the product that you purchase because directions will vary by manufacturer.

carpet cleaningMemorial day is a special holiday for most people. We typically spend a lot of time with our friends and family and have large get togethers at our homes. But what happens if you have a water leak or a carpet emergency. Can you find a carpet cleaner or carpet cleaning service that is open on the holiday?

The answer is typically yes. Many of the larger companies may be closed but it should not be too hard to find an independent carpet cleaner who is working. Many independent carpet cleaners will not turn down work and will work nearly 7 days a week. To find one, simply do a search for your city and carpet cleaning and go down the list. Don’t be afraid to leave your name and number so that the company can call you back. Before long, you should be able to find a company or cleaner that is able to get to you the same day.
