If you smoke in your house or are moving into a house where a smoker has lived, you know that nicotine stains can be difficult to remove. The cigarette smoke will penetrate every surface of the home including the carpet. Here is how you can remove cigarette smoke or nicotine stains from your carpet.
The Do It Yourself Method
If you are an adamant do it yourselfer, you can handle this project yourself if the staining is not too sever. Rent a carpet cleaner from your local home improvement store and also be sure to get the carpet shampoo that comes with it. While you are there, also grab a cheap one gallon garden sprayer. When you get home, fill the carpet cleaning machine with plain hot water. Do not add the cleaning solution to the tank. Instead, mix up the cleaner in your gallon sprayer and spray the carpet. Allow the cleaner to dwell for a few minutes and then extract it with the carpet cleaner. If necessary, spray the cleaner on the carpet again and rinse to remove all of the nicotine residue. Make a few extra dry passes with the machine and then allow the carpet to dry before putting it back to use.
The Professional Method
If the nicotine staining on the carpet is moderate to severe, you may need to call a professional in to handle the situation. Their professional equipment will be able to remove more of the nicotine and they will have access to professional deodorizers that can treat the odor.
