How to clean pee from a mattress.
It happens, whether it is a by product of potty training or just one of those little accidents in the night, you might at one point have to deal with a pee or urine stain on your mattress. It can be difficult to deal with, especially if you have a pillow top. You have two choices to deal with this matter, you can throw the mattress out or you can clean it. Let’s try to clean it before you waste hundreds of dollars on a new mattress. Here are a couple of ways that you can clean pee from a mattress.
Method 1: Enzyme Treatment
Enzymes work by breaking down the organic matter in a stain. They will basically break down all of the organic matter in the urine so that there is nothing left to cause an odor. One of the best known enzymes on the market is called Nature’s Miracle and it is available readily online. Click here to check prices on Amazon. To work properly, an enzyme must be given time to work. This means that the mattress will need to be left wet for 1 to 2 days in most cases. Read the label on the bottle for exact directions.
Method 2: Hot Water Extraction
This will remove the urine physically with hot water. You can either call a professional carpet cleaner to do this or you can do it yourself by renting a carpet cleaner with an upholstery tool. If you decide to go about things yourself, you will want to fill the machine with the hottest tap water available. Before extracting the spot, spray it with a mixture of one part white distilled vinegar and two parts water. Let the mixture dwell for a few minutes and then rinse away. Repeat if necessary. Dry the mattress as soon as possible. Place it in the sun if possible.
Method 3: Wicking Method
This method will rely on the power of water to wick up into an absorbent material. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar and two parts water in a spray bottle. Spray the solution on the spot and then place a layer of plain white paper towels on the spot. Follow this with a heavy weight. Allow the vinegar solution, along with the urine to wick into the paper towels. Replace the towels as they become soaked. Repeat if needed.
*Allow the mattressto dry fully before putting it back to use, especially if you plan to place a mattress pad on the mattress.
*A light mist of hydrogen peroxide can remove urine stains left behind.
