How do I remove Coke from a carpet?

Clean CokeWe recently received a question about how to remove Coke or Coca Cola stains from a home carpet. Fortunately, this type of stain proves to be one of the easier stains to remove. You have to be thorough however, because if any of the soda is left in the carpet, it will attract soil like a magnet. To remove coke from your carpet, you will first need to gather the necessary tools. You will need some dye free paper towels or some white cotton towels. We prefer white cotton towels since they will not shed on your carpet and they are more absorbent and reusable. You can purchase a dozen good quality terry cloth towels at your home improvement store for under $10. Besides the towels, you will also need a bottle of spot cleaner. You can buy a commercial spotter or you can make your own by adding a tablespoon of a mild dish washing soap such as Joy into a 32 ounce spray bottle and filling it with water. Keep in mind that you should use dish washing soap and NOT laundry or dish washing detergent which would be too aggressive for carpet.Lastly, you will need a vinegar solution which you can make by adding one part white distilled vinegar to two parts water in a spray bottle. So for a standard 32 ounce spray bottle, add about 10 ounces of white vinegar and fill it the rest of the way with water.

  • Step 1:
If the spot is fresh, dab the spot with clean and dry towels until no more of the stain transfers to the cloth. Be sure to dab and do not rub the spot. Rubbing the spot will abrade the fibers.
  • Step 2:
Lightly mist the spot with your general spotter. Allow the spotter to dwell for a few seconds and then blot it up with your towel. Once again, dab the spot, do not rub.
  • Step 3:
Repeat this process until no more of the Coke stain transfers to your cloth.
  • Step 4:
Neutralize your spotter with your vinegar solution. Apply a generous amount of the vinegar solution to the spot without over saturating the area. Blot the solution up after giving it a few seconds of dwell time.
  • Step 5:
Allow the area to fully dry before putting it back to use. A small portable fan can be uses to speed drying time.
